Hebrew translation: התחברות פעילה

English to Hebrew translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Computers: Systems, Networks / web sites
English term or phrase: active session
For a visitor to a website, for the period of his visit the site opens a SESSION. While the person is active on the website - Active Session, when the person is inactive for a particular period of time - Session Timeout.

Is there a used Hebrew term for that?

Hebrew translation:התחברות פעילה
Explanation:
"Session" is tricky in Hebrew.
Usually most of us translate is as הפעלה
following Microsoft's glossary,
but "הפעלה פעילה" is really not so...

There's also a point in not automatically succumb to Microsoft's dictations, especia;;y if they're not so hot and there are alternatives.

If you feel like a democratic rebel :-) here's what the competition from Oracle and the guys on the open-source corner are using:
"התחברות (SESSION)"
http://demo.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ODE/Deloitte/default.asp...
"מפתח התחברות (session key) "
code.djangoproject.com/changeset/2652

I've also seen שיחה and שיח used quite often
(see שיחה פעילה here: sun.eitan.ac.il/term/7142,
"שכבת השיח - Session layer" www2.eitan.ac.il/comnet/file1227.asp, and here:
Session Key: מפתח שיחה - he.wikipedia.org/wiki/קרברוס_(פרוטוקול))

so שיחה פעילה or שיח פעיל can work too...

Want to risk challenging Microsoft?

I took your version, because it fits very well the context describing the time relationship between the user and the web site. I used התחברות פעילה and "התחברותך התיישנה" in messages. Thank you very much for help and explanation.

Probably in a more technical context Doron's version will work better.

סבב

Explanation:
The common term in Networks is סבב - in part the time in which two or more computers are communicating. I think that in this context it is the less awkward solution.
Other option might be שיח although in the professional context it is not what your text is referring to.
And as a last resort I would have used סשן which is sometimes common but I don't like.

you can also use, of course, חיבור as in חיבור פעיל or פעילות. I think that it is better to make the text understandable rather than "accurate".

neutral  Ron Armon: חיבור, התחברות, שיחה, - I certainly agree with those, although we should try to differetiate fron "connection". I don't like סבב much (and can't really remember seeing it used often)

הפעלה פעילה

Explanation:
According to Microsoft official terminology it's הפעלה פעילה

agree  Jonathan Addess: not used by anyone, but it is the official Microsoft term

neutral  Ron Armon: Correct in glossaries, and I use it too, in lack of better options. Still הפעלה פעילה is awkward. I'm all for using something different for "session" ASAP. What do you think?

התקשרות פעילה

Explanation:
I've been using
התקשרות
for session for years now - I believe it's the best option for this difficult term. This is what you do really - communicate with the server/site for a given period, then end the communication, so session timeout is:
סוף/תום ההתקשרות

Btw, never liked the MS version, that is:
הפעלה
seems like it was invented by an exhausted terminologist late one night, and stuck ever after.

agree  Zmira Hajudge: As the word "session" in this context can not be translated only localized, your answer is the most suitable.

מקטע פעיל

Explanation:
This is just an suggestion "to break" the MS spell...
I agree with Shai about how we tend to turn to MS for glossary, as if they invented everything that has to do with computers.

I have not seen my suggestion used in IT context, but it doesn't mean it cannot be used.

neutral  Ron Armon: Hi Lingo! I can't approve of your variant this time. I'd rather fight MS with Doron's suggestion :-). Note that sessions are not really parts or pieces (or slices/sections/segments/fragments..) of a greater whole, as מקטע may (mis)lead readers to think.
