English term or phrase: A wild card
A 'wild card' - a metaphor from card-playing - means an athlete [or team] selected to compete in a tournament or playoff from among those who did not qualify by meeting the regular requirements. It is a general sporting terms for a player/team that has not qualified for a competition but is allowed to take part, at the organisers' discretion, after all the regular places have been taken. If someone gets a wild card or is a wild card in a sports competition, they are allowed to enter the competition without passing the usual tests: - ‘She was included in the European team as a wild card’.

In UK English it also means someone who does not seem to have much chance of winning a race or competition – an outsider - e.g. ‘Last year he was a wild card/ rank outsider for the title’.
The term has also evolved to describe an unpredictable factor in any number of domains i.e. someone or something that you do not know much about and whose behaviour in the future you cannot be certain of:- ‘The real wild card is the undecided vote, which accounts for 18 to 25 percent of the electorate. The company is fast gaining a reputation as the wild card of Wall Street because of violent fluctuations in its profits.’

Thaks to all for your help. Clearly this is the technical term that can be used but the English 'wild card/ουαϊλντ καρντ' would be clearly intelligible to most Greeks. I liked the simple ειδική συμμετοχή of Santina also - I learn so much from a single question on ProZ. I hope the situation in Athens calms down for you. I can understand the real financial pain and violence in Greece: I feel empathy for the former and sadness for the latter.

δεν γνωρίζω κάποιον αντίστοιχο ελληνικό όρο, καθώς το ειδική συμμετοχή δεν θα χρειαζόταν επεξήγηση.
