English term or phrase: companion
The equations used by these astronomers were formulated in terms of circular orbits and so even though the ***companion*** appears to allow stable orbits beyond 0.6 AU, the calculation is not strictly valid because 70 Virginis B does not possess a circular orbit. The habitable zone extends from 0.36 AU to 2.7 AU. Because 70 Virginis B is in such an eccentric orbit, its formation mechanism is perhaps qualitatively different from that which has formed the other giant extrasolar planets, because they are all in more or less circular orbits. It would seem, therefore, that all bets are off for finding habitable worlds around 70 Virginis, because the system may have formed in the same way as a binary star, rather than as a single star with a planet-forming disc.
