English term or phrase: stranded braids
Hallo liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen,
ich habe hier eine Mitarbeiterzeitschrift eines Seilherstellers.
Da geht es um ein Tiefseekabel:

Lanko®Deep fiber rope will be used on a Parkburn Deep Water Capstan with storage winch capable of accommodating 4,000m of 88mm rope. The rope comprises ***12 stranded braids*** where each ***strand*** is a ***three-strand*** rope. This construction, combined with the DM20’s XBO coating, helps reduce the tension required to bed-in the rope, as well as reducing internal heating and abrasion.

Draht = wire
Litze = braid
Einlage brauch ich (vermutlich) nicht
Seil = rope

TelecommunicationEdit

In communications cables, transposition is used to reduce coupling between circuits in the same cable. The principal measure is the pitch or lay length,[2] the distance over which the pairs of a circuit are twisted. By twisting, the wires become longer than the cable. The stranding factor indicates the relationship of single wire length to cable length; it amounts to with communication cables about 1.02 to 1.04.

Kinds of strandingEdit

In practice the following kinds of stranding occur more frequently:

Pair stranding: Two single wires are stranded to twisted pair transmission line.Three-stranding: Three single wires are stranded to a tripartite group.Four-stranding: Two tightly twisted pairs may be loosely twisted together, or:Star quad twisting: Four single wires maintain the same relation to each other in the quad, whereby the members of a twisted pair face each other diagonally.

A braid (also referred to as a plait) is a complex structure or pattern formed by interlacing three or more strands of flexible material such as textile yarns, wire, or hair. Compared with the process of weaving, which usually involves two separate, perpendicular groups of strands (warp and weft), a braid is usually long and narrow, with each component strand functionally equivalent in zigzagging forward through the overlapping mass of the others. The most common braid is a flat, solid, three-stranded structure. More complex braids can be constructed from an arbitrary number of strands to create a wider range of structures. Braids have been made for thousands of years[1] in many different cultures, and for a variety of uses. Traditionally, the materials used in braids have depended on the indigenous plants and animals available in the local area.

When the Industrial Revolution arrived, mechanized braiding equipment was invented to increase production. The braiding technique was used to make ropes, with both natural and synthetic fibers, and coaxial cables for radios using copper wire. In more recent times it has been used to create a covering for fuel pipes in jet aircraft and ships, first using glass fibre, then stainless steel and Kevlar. Pipes for domestic plumbing are often covered with stainless steel braid.
