English term or phrase: a no-frills tavern
From an article in NY-Times:

The Old Worthen House, a no-frills tavern still sporting what looks like its original 1834 tin ceiling on a street as yet ungentrified in the old mill town of Lowell, Mass., has seen its share of cosmic theorizing.

My idea is to use "schmucklose Gaststätte", who has got a better idea?
TIA
Ute

Schänke, Schankhaus
Schenke, Schenkhaus
Der Duden erlaubt beides.. als Gast würde ich ein aber ein Schenkhaus bevorzugen - klingt nach Freibier ;-)
