to punt on this sich dafür aussprechen / diese Alternative befürworten Explanation: Die Gruppe sprach sich für die zweite genannte Alternative aus, also den baldigen Abzug der US-Truppen aus dem Irak. Siehe z. |

den Ball in die gegnerische Hälfte kicken Explanation: The term comes from American football. To punt - a kick made when the punter drops the ball and kicks it while it falls toward his foot. Examples: A punt usually occurs on fourth down and is designed to drive the other team back as far as possible before they take possession of the ball. http://football.about.com/cs/football101/g/gl_punt.htm The meaning of to punt in this context is that they gave the ball to the Iraqis. They placed the emphasis on what the Iraqis could do. They argued for increasing efforts to build the Iraqi army and police so the US could eventually withdraw. |

More specifically, to give up on figuring out what the Right Thing is and resort to an inefficient hack. To hand a tricky implementation problem off to some other section of the design. “It's too hard to get the compiler to do that; let's punt to the runtime system.” http://www.answers.com/punting&r=67#after_ad1 Dazu fällt mir ein: Nicht insistieren, einlenken, umschwenken, abgeben, passen; sich ausklinken ( etwa aus einer Kontroverse oder Debatte) |

Auf das spekulierten sie, indem sie ... Explanation: I propose... "punt on" isn't an expression here, to punt - spekulieren, on - preposition |
