Looking now at the German table (thanks, Annett!) , you do the same:
Proband (your husband) . go across and down and the deceased is your husband's Neffe 2. Grades and his son (the son of the deceased) is one further down, i.e. Großneffe 2. Grades".

Whether anyone would actually SAY this, is another consideration entirely !

The wikimedia table (thanks, Marianne!) is just what we need.
First you must assume that one of the people you are thinking about (ie. your husband) is the "Self" in the orange box. Then the deceased is the middle green box in the next column to your right -(i.e. one across plus one down) "first cousin once removed" and his son one green box further down "first cousin twice removed".

lass das mal stehen, meiner Meinung nach ist das korrekt so. Mit den beiden Charts auf Wikipedia ist das eigentlich ganz offensichtlich. Ja, es könnte auch etwas anderes heißen, aber mit Ediths Erklärung ist es hier definitiv der Neffe zweiten Grades. Aber den "first cousin twice removed" kriege ich in Deutsch auch nicht hin...

Irgendwie komme ich mit B.D.'s "OR" nicht zurecht. Das nach OR gesagte scheint zu stimmen, das davor nicht.
Ist mir zu hohe Mathematik.

We just learned that a family member of my husband's got killed, and we were trying to sort out the relationship and got to the point that this family member was my husband's cousin once removed i.e. he was the son of one of my husband's first cousins. We simply wondered what that may be in German, and what his children i.e. first ??? cousins twice removed? second cousins once removed ??? were and how that might be translated into German

This is really quite tricky, so I suggest starting with the basics:

1st cousin = a child of one's uncle or aunt (one shares two grandparents with this person)

2nd cousin = a child of one's parent's first cousin (one shares 2 great-grandparents with this person)
3rd cousin = a child of one's parent's second cousin
xth cousin = a child of one's parent's (x-1)th cousin (sorry about my maths, hope it is clear this way)

Then we have the "removed" lot:


1st cousin once removed= a child of one's first cousin OR
= one's parent's first cousin
1st cousin twice removed= a grandchild of one's first cousin OR
= one's grandparent's first cousin
and so on.
I have never met ANYONE in the U.K. who knows the difference between all these terms (myself included) !
