Reference: Wassereinzugsgebiet Reference information: omain Natural resources, Earth sciences, Physical environment Domain note water resources surface water en Definition area drained by a stream or other body of water Note The limits of a given catchment area are the heights of land—often called drainage divides, or watersheds—separating it from neighboring drainage systems. The amount of water reaching the river, reservoir, or lake from its catchment area depends on the size of the area, the amount of precipitation, and the loss through evaporation (determined by temperature, winds, and other factors and varying with the season) and through absorption by the earth or by vegetation; absorption is greater when the soil or rock is permeable than when it is impermeable. A permeable layer over an impermeable layer may act as a natural reservoir, supplying the river or lake in very dry seasons. The catchment area is one of the primary considerations in the planning of a reservoir for water-supply purposes. Term catchment Reliability 3 (Reliable) Term Ref. Sydney Water. Catchments, www.sydneywater.com.a... [6.2.2015] Context A catchment is an area of land, usually surrounded by mountains or hills, where all water that falls, flows to a common point. When rain falls on the ground in a catchment, it flows by gravity to the ocean or a lake. If the water flows on top of the ground it is called run-off. If it soaks into the ground it is called groundwater. Runoff and groundwater flow into waterways like creeks, rivers, lakes, lagoons and wetlands. This water eventually flows into the ocean. Within catchments, dams are built on rivers to store water and give us a more permanent water supply. Term watershed Reliability 3 (Reliable) Term Ref.
