This describes the installation of the screw:

The screw fitted complete with the extension piece is pushed gently into the barrel until the spline engages with the **female stub shaft**.
If the splines do not line up, rotate the screw until the spline engages, and push it home.

I translate "stub shaft" as "Wellenstumpf" here, but what is a female stub shaft?

A 'spline' is a Keilwelle which in this case has to be inserted into its equivalent recess, i.e. Keilnabe. The text does not refer to 'Gewinde'.
