The resulting residue matter is called char. By the action of heat, charring removes hydrogen and oxygen from the solid, so that the remaining char is composed primarily of carbon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charring Carbonization (or carbonisation) is the term for the conversion of an organic substance into carbon or a carbon-containing residue through pyrolysis or destructive distillation. It is often used in organic chemistry with reference to the generation of coal gas and coal tar from raw coal. Fossil fuels generally are the products of the carbonization of vegetable matter. Im Verlauf der Verkohlung sackt der Meiler langsam ein. : Die dabei entstehende Hitze ist so groß, dass eine Annäherung an den Meiler unmöglich wird. Die Kohle muss nun min. 12 Stunden auskühlen. Zu kleinstückige Kohle verbleibt im Meiler und wird unter die Lösche gemischt. Es bleibt zu rund 98 % nur das Kohlenstoffgerüst der Holzzellen zurück.
