I'm almost sure the translation of the term "copyediting" is simply "révision". And of course, copyediting is diffrent from proofreading (relecture). Let me try to explainn the two and you will certainly better understand the term "révision".
Copyediting (révision), unlike proofreading, consists of examining and reworking the text from a stylistic and linguistic point of view. It is not only a question of correcting mistakes, but also of improving the text in depth. The intelligibility of the text for the reader is at the heart of the process. Complex and hard-to-understand sentences and overly familiar passages are reformulated, repetitions are removed, missing links are restored. If necessary, the text is completed and the paragraphs are rearranged.
Proofreading, unlike copyediting, usually consists only of checking spelling, grammar, and typography. This step only takes place on the last version of the text, for example just before printing. So that nothing is forgotten, the proofreading must follow the principle of the four eyes. This means that two people read the same text in turn.
