'overlap' is a curious term to use here, and is in fact arguably just plain wrong!
From the detailed description given, they seem to be referring to 'superimposing' images, and I would translate it as such here.

The word they might have been trying to use was 'overlay', which would indeed be correct in this meaning.
And the correct translation for that in this context would also be 'superposer'.
