English term

sangamoa

English to French Other Folklore Geography/Folklore/Fidji
Bonjour,

nous sommes en Nouvelle-Zélande; une femme qui vivait originairement à Fidji dit de son mari :

"He was a ***sangamoa***".

Si ça peut aider, mais j'ignore si les deux idées sont liées, elle ajoute : "A dirty sailor."

Je ne trouve aucune trace du terme "sangamoa" et j'ai déjà trouvé dans le document des termes mal retranscrits, donc je me dis qu'il ne s'agit peut-être pas du bon terme.

Merci beaucoup d'avance à qui pourra m'aider.
Bonne semaine à tous.

Merci à tous, je n'ai toujours pas trouvé d'idée satisfaisante.
Gat (asker) Jul 14, 2006:
Neat guess Sue! I'll try this and will keep you informed. Enjoy your weekend.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 13, 2006:
The only other thing I can think of is "Samoan".
Gat (asker) Jul 13, 2006:
No Fidjian-French translator here, and only two Fidjian-English! Who could have imagined? I am pretty sure now this word is misspelt, because I have had no problem finding the other Fidjian words which appear in the document (bilo, kaivalagi,...) To be continued...
Gat (asker) Jul 12, 2006:
Thank you very much Sue. I am not sure this is the correct word in English, because I d not find it spelt that way anywhere, neither in English, nor in French. Otherwise, indeed, I could leave it this way.
Jonathan, I am going to follow your good advice. Thanks!
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 11, 2006:
Why translate anyway? It's not translated in the English.
Dr Sue Levy (X) Jul 11, 2006:
Sanga and moa are words of Polynesian origin. Moa means "fowl" (the moa bird is now extinct in NZ). "Sanga na langa" means "no worries" in Fijian!
Jonathan MacKerron Jul 11, 2006:
as many Fidjians are of Indian origin, the word may have Hindi roots?
