The newspaper uncertainty index I construct follows the “Main Street” index of Alexopoulos and Cohen (2015) which is also one of the components of the “policy uncertainty” index of Baker et al. (2013). The newspaper index not only produces a alternative uncertainty measure to the stock volatility measure, but also provides a measure that is not based on “Wall Street,” but is based on journalists covering conditions in the broader economy. This index measures the number of times “uncertain” or “uncertainty” and “economic” or “economy” appeared in articles in the New York Times from 1923-1941.

neutral  Francois Boye: why not say 'ndice journalistque d'incerttude' ? This is more economically relevant than a newspaper index

  -> Because the text says "the newspaper index", not "the uncertainty newspaper index". + La phrase indique déjà qu'il s'agit d'uncertainty proxies. Enfin, je n'exclus pas "indice"; la préférence dépend de la présentation en contexte.
