I'm beginning to think this 'scanning' is in fact not pysically scanning to see where there are gaps on the shelves, but rather, scanning the shelf-edge labels at those gaps, in order to directly inform the central stock management computer of the items lacking, so the inventory can be reconciled and new stocks ordered if necessary; in that case, 'scanning' in the sense of barcodes and/or RFID, rather than optically scanning shelving gaps — which would only tell you that there is a gap, without telling you what is supposed to be in it! |
