Työntekijöiden tehollinen työaika lasketaan kertomalla vakiotuntipalkka varsinaisilla työtunneilla tiettynä ajanjaksona. Tehollista työaikaa verrataan varsinaisiin työtunteihin työtehon erojen yksilöimiseksi.

Jos puhutaan koneista, käytetään termiä "käyttöaika".
