English term or phrase: to celebrate one’s saint’s day
Greetings,

In the Greek Orthodox Church, rather than birthdays, one celebrates one’s saint’s day. For example, today is my saint’s day, the day of Saint Simon – if I were in Greece I would go out and celebrate this with my friends.

Saint Simon was a very, very old man who had asked God to let him live until the Messiah was born so that he could hold the baby in his arms, and so the day that he actually did this, 3rd February, became Saint Simon’s Day in the Greek Orthodox Church (and presumably in the other orthodox churches too).

I imagine this is far from completely unknown in Iran (as is the case in almost all of Turkey today) as there is quite a large Orthodox community still.

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

That should be جشن and not جنبش; moreover, you need a را / رو before جشن. The قدیس and مقدس are literally the same in Persian, but you are right about the usage. In Christian context, مقدس is mostly used for Virgin Mary and the Bible (کتاب مقدس), but for saints and apostles, I've mostly seen قدیس, so we may conclude that مقدس is higher than قدیس.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you so much Ahmad - I've now got the full sentence, which is great: امروز دارم روز عید قدیس من، سیمون قدیس، جنبش میگیرم. Is this correct, please? Is قدیس one step below مقدس? You seem to use the latter only for the Virgin Mary. In Greek a saint is agios (feminine “agia”), which literally means “holy”, but the Virgin Mary is known as “panagia” (literally “all-holy”). Perhaps agios/agios is قدیس and panagia is مقدس?

Asker: Much obliged, Ahmad - sorry about my egregiously bad typo!

Asker: (If that's what it was - I really don't know!)
