The migration of shoreline out of a basin and onto land during retrogradation. A transgression can result in sediments characteristic of shallow water being overlain by deeper water sediments.

یک نظریه قدیمی چینه شناسی ، پیشروی و پسروی دریاها می‌باشد. با در نظر گرفتن مرکز حوضه به عنوان مبنا ، هرگاه از پیشروی صحبت شود دریا ساحل را فرا می‌گیرد و روی آن پیش می‌رود. ولی هرگاه صحبت از پسروی باشد ساحل نزدیک می‌گردد یا به عبارتی دریا ساحل را رها می‌کند و عقب می‌کشد.
