بیابان‏زایی چیست؟
بیابان‏زایی؛ یعنی تخریب زمین‏ها در مناطق خشک، نیمه‏خشک و نیمه‏مرطوب تحت‏تأثیر عوامل اقلیمی و انسانی. این تخریب می‏تواند سبب از بین رفتن پوشش گیاهی و پیدایش شرایط بیابانی شود و بر گسترش و قلمرو بیابان‏ها بیفزاید. البته نواحی تبدیل شده به بیابان، توان قابل ملاحظه‏ای دارند و می‏توان آنها را با مدیریت منظم، برنامه‏ریزی اصولی و هدایت شده و حفاظت آب، بازسازی کرد.

چنین مناطقی در سطح کره‏زمین وسعتی برابر 21 میلیون کیلومتر مربع دارد که حدود بیست درصد خشکی‏ها را در برمی‏گیرد. گرم‏ترین آنها صحرای افریقای شمالی و سردترین آنها صحرای گوبی مغولستان است. در جهان سیزده بیابان وجود دارد و دشت کویر و دشت لوت ایران، از مهم‏ترین بیابان‏های جهان به شمار می‏روند.
