* (Not for points) Explanation: Misschien heb je wat aan de volgende definite van 'string theory' uit The Penguin Desk Encylcopedia of Science and Mathematics [Bunch & Tesar]: string theorie [particles [i.t.t. geluid, JdH]] = "String theory replaces the particles of the standard model with very short curves, or strings, having 1 dimension, length. Some strings have ends while others form loops. Strings are as short compared to an atom as an atom is to the solar system. Strings exist in 10 dimensions, including the 3 familiar space dimensions of length, width and height, a time dimension, and 6 other space dimensions that are wound up too tightly to be observed. Strings interact by joining or splitting, described by a 2-dimensional surface in space-time called the *worldsheet* of the string. One reason for the popularity of string theory is that it is mathematically simpler than particle theory. Its main flaw is that no known experiment can establish that strings exit." Het gaat in ieder geval kennelijk om een tweedimensionale grootheid, waardoor zowel de vertalingen 'wereldblad' als 'wereldvlak' in aanmerking komen. Googelend op beide kom ik tot conclusie dat er misschien wat meer te zeggen is voor 'wereldblad' dan 'wereldvlak'. Die referentie van Margreet lijkt me -- met alle respect -- eigenlijk ook wat betrouwbaarder dan die van frameworks. Succes! |

worldsheet Explanation: Ik zou de term onvertaald laten, gezien het feit dat het in dit proefschrift van de UVA (zie link) ook niet vertaald is.
