In many ways, the term ‘Factual Entertainment’ is the ideal solution to the enigmatic reality genre that normally eludes one specific definition. The term encompasses the range of programs broadcast on Australian television that could be considered to be reality television programming, but which actually contain elements from a number of distinct formats that often overlap. While the word ‘factual’ identifies that there is an element of truth or reality, the term ‘entertainment’ clearly comments on the highly produced nature of the programs that it's key purpose is not to depict ‘reality’, but to ‘entertain’. Whilst reality television is often criticised for creating contrived situations for the purpose of entertainment, the term “factual entertainment” cannot be critiqued because it states this intention upfront, and for this reason it has become more accepted and widely used.

Zoals ik in mijn bijdrage aangaf zijn reality tv/shows etc, wel een vorm van factual entertainment, maar de term zelf is veel algemener, breder dan tv/docu. Ik denk dat Wilhelmina het goed heeft gedaan door geen risico te nemen en het onvertaald te laten. Het enige wat je misschien zou kunnen doen is 'factual' vervangend door 'reality', omdat die term bekender is in Nederland en de betekenis 100% overeenkomt.

Factual Entertainment is (voor zover ik het heb kunnen doorgronden) een uit de Amerikaanse televisiewereld overgewaaide kreet, waar wij (volgens mij) in principe geen NL vertaling voor hebben. Met name het woord "factual" in deze context doet de wenkbrauwen fronsen.

De kreet wordt vaak onvertaald gelaten, maar ik kom ook vertalingen tegen als "feitelijk amusement" (Discovery gaat over feitelijk amusement (factual entertainment) - zie http://dutchmedia.nl/blog/index.php/2008/11/23/discovery-cha... of "actueel amusement", dus "echte" entertainment (????).
