I can completely see your point, Stuart. Sure, tangy is stronger than svěží and none of the other suggested words is quite spot on, either. In fact, I have thought about this word before when I tried to conquer some new recipies and have not found a precise, or at least approximate, Czech equivalent, so far. That's why I suggested referring to the flavour of citrus fruits because this would IMO convey the idea most closely to the Czech recipient.

This has been a very interesting question to investigate. With “řízný“ I was simply trying to steer the suggestions the way I thought tangy should go – it wasn’t meant as a genuine translation and I wasn’t originally going to contribute (not my field), but I just thought svěží was too light, šťavnatý was too juicy and pikantní was too hot. However, having looked up Czech texts on lemon curd (citrónový krém apparently), citrónová poleva and lemon marmalade (all tangy items for me), they use the translations proposed by the other contributors (I also found sladkokyselý). Perhaps it’s a cultural thing, perhaps there is no precise equivalent of tangy, but most likely, it’s probably just me. :)

Yeah I know. But trpký is too much, řízný is not usually associated with cream mousse...

I think you've got to convey the "trpkost" somehow - "tangy" is also meant to be a bit of a warning. There's a definite reaction from your taste buds. I'm sure you're familiar with the "You've been tango'ed" commercials (they're playing on the word tangy). E.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59Mg96vu4BM
