Kao oblik propagande, astroturfingom se pokušava selektivno utjecati na emocije ciljane publike, bez obzira pokušava li se pobijediti u kampanji, prodati najviše muzičkih CD-a, prodati najviše knjiga ili dobiti političku potporu. Astroturfing se obično sastoji u tome da se samo nekoliko ljudi diskretno predstavi kao masovni broj aktivista promovirajući određeni cilj. Ciljana skupina će biti zatrpana porukama vezanim uz cilj iz više medija simulirajući visoku razinu interesa javnosti. Astroturferi su upućeni u to što trebaju reći, kako i u koje medije, a kako će to prikazati i koje će emocije poslati zajedno sa porukom u potpunosti je proizvoljno i spontano, čime se postiže kredibilnost izvora.
