Crucial to psychosocial maturity in these years is to develop a sense of generativity, through concern for, nurture and guidance of the next and future generations. Men and women may develop generativity through their productive efforts in the workforce or voluntary and community activities but, more commonly, it occurs through parenting – not just having children, but assisting and socialising them toward mature, responsible and satisfying adulthood.
