If you can just prepare a group for the groan zone, or acknowledge its existence, this can be a significant step for a group to take. This is where a facilitator plays a key role.

Explanation:
The Groan Zone
This is a very difficult time for change oriented organizations. The degree of tension,
unrest and fractionalization is at its highest. Long term partners and members will often
leave because they are uncomfortable with the conflict. Organizations in the ‘Groan Zone’
can, if they are able to continue forward direction, move through this very challenging
period. However, many groups find this difficult. Those with a tolerance for the unrest
and a desire for the new possibilities are obvious leaders at this stage. The organization
benefits and is better equipped to deal with the stress at this stage if people are helped to
understand this model. Normalizing the conflict makes it easier for many to continue on
the path.
