Von Mises Stress
For the analyses of the beam column joints (BCJ) under multi-axial loading conditions, the Von Mises stress criterion was utilized. It is an equivalent tensile stress derived from all the stresses within the element. Von Mises criterion is a widely used method in the assessment of isotropic- ductile elements such as steel.
Von Mises stress is derived from principal stresses from the three orthogonal axes. From first principles, principal stress is calculated based on the axial in plane stress: σ1 and σ2, the out of plane stress σ3 and the in plane shear stresses; T11 and T22. The principal stress is obtained by plotting the axial/out of plane stress and the shear stresses in a Mohr’s Circle. Equivalent maximum stress obtained from the plot is the principal stress. The principal stress values at the three orthogonal axes are then used to determine a single scalar value-Von Mises stress that is comparable to the material strength in simple tension, Fy.
