Vanaf die tijd ontstonden rondom het stadscentrum immers nieuwe handelswijken, **verzorgingstehuizen** zoals het Sint-Jacobusgasthuis en ambachtelijke kwartieren.

Aus der mittelalterlichen Stadtgeschichte Tongerens. Ich gehe mal davon aus, dass es zu dieser Zeit noch keine Pflegeheime gab. Handelt es sich hier um eine Art "Armenhaus"?

Het voormalig St-Jacobusgasthuis werd als herberg voor pelgrims op weg naar Santiago de Compostella gesticht tussen 1050 en 1195. De Gasthuiskapel werd aangebouwd in 1283 - 1284. In 1660 werd deze kapel verbouwd en verkreeg ze haar huidig uitzicht. In het kleine zaalkerkje bevinden zich een aantal waardevolle kunstvoorwerpen, waaronder het praalgraf van Marie de Berchem - Gravin de Hinnisdael, toegeschreven aan J.
