Dutch term or phrase: toelichting

Weer eens een contextuele vraag. Het gaat om het beoordelen van het inkomen van een zelfstandig ondernemer bij een hypotheekaanvraag. Er staat dat ze niet alleen naar het gemiddeld resultaat kijken, maar naar het hele plaatje, dus ook naar: balanscijfers, toelichting en economische ratio's.

Nou is mijn vraag wat hierbij concreet onder "toelichting" wordt verstaan. Is dit in de zin van een business plan van de z.o. in kwestie (of uitleg van behaalde successen of tegenslagen) te verstaan, of bedoelt men hier iets concreets? Ik heb al zitten graven, maar ik kom er niet verder mee.

@Emma - So if you had to translate "the green grass" would you also want to explain how green it is? It's not your job to fill in what you consider to be blank spaces. They're only asking for information to support submitted docs.

A WRONG answer would be "collateral factors". A Google search shows that this term does indeed mean collateral factors (such as leadership, strategic planning, community relations, etc.).

But (bear with me here, I realise I may be reaching the obsessive stage) I'm not sure that the person in question is providing "a complete set of financial statements". I know they're providing income statements and balance sheets over several years. It doesn't mention the other ones.
