Medical - Medical: Health Care / healthcare insurance Netherlands
Dutch term or phrase: coulance as in \'coulanceregeling\' or \'coulancevergoeding\'
Hello,
I'm translating a letter from a Dutch Healthcare insurer to one of their English speaking clients.

I need a translation for the term 'coulance' (as in 'coulanceaanvraag'): a request for an exceptional one-off compensation of healthcare costs for an experimental treatment that is not covered by the regular healthcare insurance plan.

I'm not sure such a one-off compensation is possible in other countries, but if so, is there a specific term for this?

As for now I'm going with a descriptive translation: ...as a gesture of goodwill ... a one-off compensation...

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Christine

ex gratia payment

Explanation:
Ex Gratia Payment

Latin for "from favor." A payment by an insurer to an insured for which there is no liability under the contract. In some cases, an insurer may feel there has been a mistake or a misunderstanding, and may pay a claim even though it does not appear to be liable.

Examples of ex gratia payments

Compensation payments are often made ex gratia when a government or organization is prepared to compensate victims of an event such as an accident or similar, but not to admit liability to pay compensation, or for causing the event.
(...)
An insurance company may make an ex gratia payment to customers where a claim does not meet the terms and conditions but the company chooses to make a voluntary payment out of kindness or compassion, without recognizing any obligation to make such a payment.

ex gratia payment

A sum of money paid when there was no obligation or liability to pay it. For example, a lump sum payment over and above the pension benefits of a retiring employee. In insurance claims, it may take the form of payment for which the insurer did not appear to be liable. Ex gratia is Latin for "out of goodwilll." Also called ex gratia settlement.
