couperen - verhinderen, voorkomen

een verkoudheid couperen

Some medicines are used to prevent migraine attacks (episodes). They may not completely stop every migraine attack, but the number and severity of attacks are often reduced. You need to take the medicine every day.

Who should take a medicine to prevent migraine attacks?

There is no definite rule. For example, you may wish to consider this option if you have:
•More than two migraine attacks (episodes) per month that cause significant disruption to your life.
•Less frequent, but severe migraine attacks.
•The need to use a lot of painkillers or triptan medicines to treat migraine attacks.
•Painkillers or triptans for migraine attacks not working very well, or you being unable to take them because of side-effects or other problems.
•Migraine attacks, which are suspected of causing medication-induced headache - see below.

You might argue that 'prevent' may be ambiguous to an extent in this context.

What they mean here is 'preventing an attack as soon as the patient feels it is going to occur. "To stop the attack dead in its tracks. " :-)

So you could also opt for:

Person concerned currently only uses medication to abort migraine attacks.

Abortive: The goal of abortive therapy is to prevent a migraine attack or to stop it once it starts. The prescribed medications stop a headache during its prodrome stage or once it has begun and may be taken as needed. Some can be administered as a self-injection into the thigh; others, as a wafer that melts on the tongue, or as a nasal spray. These forms of medication are especially useful for people who vomit during a migraine, and they work quickly.

Preventive: This type of treatment is considered if a migraineur has more than one migraine per week. The goal is to lessen the frequency and severity of the migraine attacks. Medication to prevent a migraine can be taken daily. Different drug classes have been used successfully as preventive therapies. Preventive treatment medications include the following:

Hamalainen et al. [10] found that ibuprofen was twice as likely as acetaminophen to abort migraine attacks within the 2-h endpoint. In the second study,

So you could vary this:

Etc.

-> Thank you very much, Anne. Yes, on reflection, 'abort', and variations, are much more precise in this context, and basically is what the asker is looking for.
