Explanation:
I have found that this term was left as is and placed in italics and I remember reading 'guest residents' somewhere. At the Tropical Museum site you can find references:

Apart from the Veldhuisen collection, however,
most of the cloths were acquired from the s until the end of the s. This can
probably be explained by the history of the colonial period and the lives of most

Indies

Explanation:
Met daarachter: (people who have spent a long time in the former Dutch East Indies).

disagree  Michael Beijer: I don’t think 'Indies' is the correct term here in English. 'Indies' are independent films/bands, etc. See: http://goo.gl/T3aCVV / Do you have any more references to back up your claim, apart from the historiaevents.nl one? / dat heet 'te vrij vertalen'

-> Klopt helemaal, maar niet in DEZE context!/No, I haven't (looked) maar dat heet "vrij vertalen"...

disagree  Marie-Helene Dubois: Indies is definitely not the right term in this context for the same reasons as Michael has already stated. In English "Indie" is short for "Independent" as in record labels.

disagree  Toiny Van der Putte-Rademakers: Agree with Michael.

Explanation:
I would say "many Dutch residents of the former East Indies...".
Don't use"India", it's a different country and it was never Dutch.

neutral  Michael Beijer: Sounds OK, except for the fact that it is missing the aspect of having lived there for a considerable period of time, which I think is important too.
