Does indeed look like some kind of internal ref along the lines of:

"Status van de polis --- status --- an (code) --- 10 --- L = lopend, O = opgeschort, R = geroyeerd"

as I said above: "state" (or maybe even better "policy status") ("Status van de polis")

In context of due diligence on new applicant?

Just a thought. This may be an entry in a database of some kind. Before accepting a new applicant for a policy, a check is made as to whether this applicant is known to the insurance company and currently has any other policies or may have had any other policies in the past. If the applicant has had an insurance policy of any type cancelled for some reason, e.g. failure to pay a premium, then this would appear in the system with some type of identification number (kenteken) and the annotation that the policy was cancelled. Such an entry will raise a red flag vis-a-vis accepting this applicant for another policy with that company. See, for example http://tinyurl.com/nnbax8b and search geroyeerd. The manual is talking about their SAP system. I know it is not life insurance but the same principle would apply.

Dutch event insurance forms mention vehicles (and yes, Polisnummers - Omschrijvingen - Kentekens) as well, so I'd love to see that life form before guessing :-)

maybe it means reference, but, since this particular policy was/is cancelled, there is no ref#, so the form filler entered the word "cancelled" instead.

If is says "geroyeerd" (cancelled?) under "Kenteken", it seems the author is using "Kenteken" to mean something like state/condition (i.e., whether it is cancelled or not). That is: the state of the policy is: "cancelled".

Just guessing here, so don't shoot me if this makes no sense at all.

I wonder what other things one might find under the "Kenteken" heading? If cancelled ("geroyeerd") is an option, would something like covered/insured, or active (as in policy running/active) be an option?

Asker: 'Status' would fit in the context but that's not what is says. In the database you give in the discussion section 'status' is listed at the top with an explanation but 'kenteken' is listed at the bottom, unfortunately without an explanation. This seems to suggest that they are not the same thing.

Since there is no policy number, the policy having been cancelled, this would be some way of identifying the whole transaction. I would say use reference if it is not already being used for something else. Otherwise, designation will do.

My experience is that you can often still go back to a client within 24 hours or so after delivery and tell them that you had some difficulty with a term but that you now believe the translation should be such and such. They very often appreciate this. After all, it is in their best interests to have the translation be as complete and accurate as possible.
