We live in one - and so does one of the neighbours, though both have been adapted over the years. Brick, one double bedroom and two singles, small bathroom, big kitchen and pantry, and a large living room. That was what many families dreamed of in the 60s... Typical family homes for two parents and two children, good quality but affordable, because once they were designed, building them was more or less routine. Standard sized windows, doors and other fittings could be ordered in bulk for economy etc.

I would personally agree wholeheartedly with your differentiation between "house" and "home", Gitte, but that doesn't stop the UK building industry calling their houses homes :) One of the largest in the UK is called Barratt Homes (not Barratt Houses). Homes are easier to sell than houses - crisis or no crisis.

Dare I suggest that you cannot have an 'xxx HOME manufacturer'?
A home is what a house becomes when it is inhabited by a family.
At least that's my humble understanding.

David's googling would, however, seem to indicate that 'standard house' is not such a bad idea after all. That's what I would opt for.

In my understanding, 'typehuse' are not necessarily prefabricated, they are merely a lot of houses built according to the same design.

Just checked Dansk-Engelsk Industriordbog. Further to 'standard house', it suggests 'prototype house' for 'typehus'. Not much better, is it?

Not really, but thanks anyway. It seems strange to me that nothing immediately springs to mind in English. We do have these things too.
In desperation I might have to use something like "standard-design homes" but surely there is an actual name for these things in English too?

I dare not suggest this, it's just another entry in a Danish dictionary. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Any use?
