social curator Explanation: 1/One who manages or oversees, as the administrative director of i.e. museum collection, library. 2/One who has the care and superintendence of anything, as of a museum; a custodian; a keeper. 3/One appointed to act as guardian of the estate of a person not legally competent to manage it, or of an absentee; a trustee; a guardian. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2 hrs (2009-05-03 01:25:46 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Elizabeth, yes I did. Actually, I hear it very often (in my profession as a secondary school teacher in Ontario) when social workers come to our school to help students with problems at home, school...etc. Social workers talk about “our curator” as their ‘boss’ would say or advise as to do…. Other countries or provinces of Canada could possibly use a different word. I hope it helps. Reference: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/curator |

Welfare Officer Explanation: další možnost, nicméně v závorce či pod čarou by mělo být vysvětlení, že termín sociální kurátor obsahuje funkce "probation/parole officer" i "social worker" (např. německy Bewährungshelfer a Sozialarbeiter) |

social worker Explanation: Nice and simple. In the UK, at least - I work very closely with social workers in my line of work and this is exactly what they do. You are right in that it is not a probation officer - they come further down the line once the person has committed an offence, although they work closely together. Also related is the 'guardian ad litem', or 'children's guardian' - see previous kudos entry. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 hrs (2009-05-03 12:44:34 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- I don't know what the system is in the USA, but in the UK a social worker covers all of these areas. However, it is possible to work on a specialist social work team or do do a diploma in specialist social work http://www.rdlearning.org.uk/courseDetails.asp?ID=38949 - it all depends on the country to which your translation is relevant :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 hrs (2009-05-03 12:50:00 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- IMO 'sociální pracovník' is somebody who works in the field of the social services, and the 'kurátor' is a social worker, which is a highly specialist profession in itself, no matter what many people may think :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 14 hrs (2009-05-03 13:40:06 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Indeed - that link refers to the Czech Republic - I was talking about in a UK context. I think I worded my last comment poorly. In UK terms a 'kurátor' corresponds to 'social worker'. Each country has a different system - if your translation is not UK-relevant, then ignore all of the above :) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 days (2009-05-07 22:10:00 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- Thank you!
