Pokazalo se da cima (od lat. cyma, cima, a ova opet od grč. kyma) znači mlado lišće od glavice (kupusa, kelja), zeleni dio pri repi i sličnim biljkama (»perje« mladoga luka) za što se povlači gomolj ili dio biljke pod zemljom, rub ili okrajak te vršak, mladica na travi. Otkidati zaperke, pobočne izbojke kukuruza, duhana, vinove loze, iz pazušaca kaže se cimati. U njemačkom se zadržao velar k u riječi Keim, što znači klica, zametak.
