popular with children

Explanation:
Hi Frank, I reckon this noun is best translated as a description in English. The first part of the sentence could be: "I am / the author is an affable bloke popular with children...” I've translated “叔叔” as “bloke”, but if you want to translate it as “uncle” then make sure to retain the quotation marks, and add a section somewhere in the document explaining to English-speaking readers that “uncle” in Chinese can be a term used by children for young adult men.

kid magnet

Explanation:
Building on Sam Lee-Potter's answer, I agree that "popular with children" is what would sound most natural in English but I would like to add to the sentence to give it the "flavour" from the source that I feel is somehow missing from the translation.

This author is an affable middle-aged man who's a bit of a "kid magnet", popular among children in the small neighbourhood he resides in......
