I feel as though homestay's meaning is more in the sense of you are living with a family. It's most commonly used for people studying abroad and living with a local family. I think guesthouse or bed and breakfast would much better suit 民宿.

而从这个字典上的解释来看，"homestay=a vacation or other period abroad"，homestay和中文的“民宿”根本不沾边。网上有人说I live in a homestay, 但是仔细看，这都是非英语国家的留学生写的错句，而且，美国和英国的网页上，除了一两个网页含有外国留学生写的帖子中有I live in a homestay这样用的，基本上就看不到了。

Hey! Yes, that is the definition of homestay. But it refers to the physical accommodation as well. It is fine to say "I lived at a homestay/b&b/hotel". :)

hotel/motel平行的词，因为民宿是一种physical的东西，更具体地说是用来招待客人的房子。就是家庭办的1旅馆，与一般旅馆的区别只是它规模小，只有一间或者几间客房。 homestay = a stay at a residence by a traveler and especially by a visiting foreign student who is hosted by a local family，这个词典解释显然不符合题主的上下文。
