sorry, 放在句子里 absence 应该变成形容词:
“Zhang San and Li Si had been absent from work for 4 days in a row”

Notes to answerer
Asker: absence from work 是缺勤,跟旷工是有差别的,比如: 旷工:员工未经批准擅自缺勤且事后未以正当理由进行补假,或是谎报、伪造证明或以其它不正当手段骗取假期,或是于假期满后不复工且无合理解释的,均视为旷工。公司将根据实际情况按照本手册第七章员工行为规范的规定处理。本手册中的“缺勤”指的是员工在一个工作日内迟到、早退和/或中途离岗合计时间超过四个小时。

Asker: If an employee is absent from work without approval and does not apply for leave with a justifiable reason afterwards, or falsely reports or falsifies a certificate, or fraudulently obtains a leave by other improper means, or does not return to work upon the expiration of a leave without giving a reasonable explanation, it will be deemed to be absenteeism. The Company will handle it according to the actual situation pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 7 of this Handbook regarding employees’ code of conduct. For the purpose of this Handbook, “absence from work” means that an employee arrives late, leaves early and/or leaves his/her post in the midway for more than 4 hours in total within one working day.

absent from work

Explanation:
In the source text, "旷工" is used as a verb phrase. To answer your question very directly, in English the 动词短语搭配 should be a be verb with the adjective "absent" (because we don't have "absent" as a verb in English). Therefore, I would suggest phrasing the English as "were absent from work".

absence from work without leave/notice/permission, AWOL

Explanation:
Zhang San and Li Si had been absent from work without leave/notice/permission for 4 consecutive working days from 10 April 2008 to 15 April 2008.
Zhang San and Li Si had been AWOL for 4 consecutive working days from 10 April 2008 to 15 April 2008.
AWOL口语中经常使用,起源于一战时期,现在也常用于工作和生活中。
尊重题注认真的态度,旷工和缺席还是有一点不同。

Explanation:
If you are talking in legal terms, an UNEXCUSED absence is often referred to as truancy.
