David Lin: you've done an excellent job finding this graphic/text description of a siheyuan. Well done! But I'll leave the question open for further answers right now, for this reason: "Backside building" is perhaps "correct," but this is not quite the wording I'm looking for. In the literary text I'm working on, the woman of noble blood who lives there -- her history and even her present -- are very mysterious. I hope to find a term which is a little more, well, romantic.
