Catalan term or phrase: i se’n volia fer una celebració
A l’agost del 1937 també va aparèixer el darrer volum de la Flora de Catalunya i se’n volia fer una celebració per donar-lo a conèixer als mitjans de comunicació i al públic en general.

I undertand this, or else the author is confusing me. Did they or did they not have a party? if they didn't, in a scholarly article, why refer to the intention?

Maybe someone can see my doubt and help clarify it.

TIA:-)

those involved wanted to celebrate the event/publication

Explanation:
I don't think it's possible to based on this sentence to say for sure whether they celebrated or not.

Perhaps the author wants to focus more on how they FELY about the publication of the book than on what actually happened.

a celebration was supposed/thought/meant to be held

Explanation:
As Ross says, from the sentence you mwention, without further context, no matter whether it was held or not. Besides, I think the passive voice sounds better here.

neutral  yayeboy: I like the passive. How about just a celebration was to be held? Meant and supposed imply that is wasn't held while thought implies that we don't know.
