Сарматский ярус (от Сарматия), нижний ярус верхнего миоцена неогеновой системы . Подразделяется на 3 подъяруса: нижний (волынский), средний (бессарабский) и верхний (херсонский). Впервые термин «С. я.» применен австрийским геологом Э. Зюссом в 1866 на основании данных русского геолога Н. П. Барбот де Марни (ранее соответствующие отложения были выделены в 1847 в Венском бассейне австрийским геологом М. Гернесом под названием «церитовых слоев»). С. я. представлен морскими и континентальными отложениями — известняками (преимущественно раковинными), глинами, песками и песчаниками; распространены на Ю. Европейской части СССР и Центральной Европы; на Ю. Западной Европы отложениям С. я. соответствуют слои мессинского яруса.
