Люди и созданные ими предметы, о которых пойдет речь, навсегда изменили представление человечества о том, какой должна быть мебель. Сейчас, в XXI в., нам не кажется странным, что стул, например, может быть невесомым, как пушинка, и поднять его способен даже ребенок. А вот в 1951 г. архитектор Джо Понти, сконструировав такой стул, названный им Superleggera («Суперлегкий»), произвел настоящую революцию. Почему мы говорим об итальянском дизайне? Потому что вот уже много лет итальянцы – законодатели моды и стиля. Безупречный вкус и любовь к прекрасному у них в крови, а продукция Made in Italy – всемирно признанный эталон высочайшего качества. А еще потому, что итальянские дизайнеры всегда стремились сделать человеческую жизнь комфортной. Пионерами дизайна были архитекторы и художники, которые использовали новые возможности, открывшиеся в связи с переходом от ремесленного к промышленному производству. до авангарда начала ХХ в. Такие его течения, как футуризм, кубизм, супрематизм, конструктивизм и неопластицизм, оказали огромное влияние на творчество величайших мастеров столетия. Мы проследим эволюцию итальянского дизайна от функционального модернизма 1940–1950-х годов, бунтарских 1960-х, эпохи радикализма 1970-х, постмодернизма 1980-х до хайтека, минимализма и интерактивного дизайна 1990-х.

Al giorno d'oggi nel XXI secolo non stupisce il fatto che una sedia, per esempio, possa essere leggera come una piuma al punto da poter essere sollevata persino da un bambino.
Tutto accadde nel 1951 quando l'architetto Gio Ponti, progettando una sedia che chiamò "Superleggera", provocò una vera e propria rivoluzione.
Perché stiamo parlando di design italiano? Perché per molti anni gli italiani hanno dettato leggi di moda e di stile. Nel loro sangue scorre gusto raffinato e innata propensione per il bello e i prodotti realizzati in Italia costituiscono uno standard di altissima qualità, riconosciuto a livello internazionale. Inoltre i designer italiani hanno sempre cercato di rendere l'esistenza dell'uomo più confortevole e piacevole. Gli italiani si distinguono per lo spiccato senso dell'umorismo, ottimismo e capacità di rendere felici gli altri.
«Se altri paesi detengono la teoria del design, l'Italia possiede la filosofia e persino l'ideologia del design» afferma il filosofo e scrittore Umberto Eco. Gli italiani sanno essere intermediari tra il passato e futuro, continuatori delle tradizioni e sperimentatori instancabili, talvolta ribelli e rivoluzionari, in grado di costruire un ambiente particolarmente esemplare.
I pionieri del design erano architetti e artisti che hanno saputo sfruttare le nuove opportunità che si sono presentate passando dalla produzione artigianale a quella industriale. Il loro peculiare senso del bello, del colore e della figura, il ricchissimo patrimonio culturale, il clima e il paesaggio hanno contribuito a formare una percezione speciale che ha portato al grandioso successo del design italiano.
In Italia il nesso tra l'arte e il design iniziò a manifestarsi in maniera particolarmente intensa dall'epoca del Rinascimento fino alle avanguardie degli inizi del Novecento. I relativi movimenti quali il Futurismo, il Cubismo, il Suprematismo, il Costruttivismo e Neoplasticismo hanno avuto un enorme impatto sul lavoro dei più grandi maestri del secolo scorso. In questo testo tracciamo l'evoluzione del design italiano dal modernismo funzionale degli anni 1940-1950, ai ribelli degli anni '60, al radicalismo degli anni '70, al postmodernismo degli anni '80 fino all'high-tech e al design interattivo e minimalista degli anni '90.
