Educational requirements for being an ATA member, or ATA-certified?

Hi folks,

I've been looking around on the ATA (American Translators Association) website but can't find any specific requirement lists for either becoming a member or ATA-certified, specifically, related to the education that one must have completed prior to joining the association.

For example, do they require a completed translation degree or some other kind of completed course of study?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

The main qualifier is the ability to pay the annual membership fee (US $204.00). The certification exam costs an additional US $525.00, which is given at specified locations..The organization recently realized that people use computers to translate, so there is now the possibility to take a computer-based examination, also at specified locations.

You don't need to be a member of ATA for earning the ATA certification Oct 21, 2020

Please take a look into:

ATA associate (non-voting) membership is open to all translators and interpreters (and anybody else with working in or with an interest in those fields), regardless of experience. Voting (Active/Corresponding) membership (which costs the same as associate membership) requires demonstrated professional experience (generally three years), or a recognized degree in translation, interpreting, or a related discipline, or accreditation/certification by a FIT member association.

ATA is in the process of developing an online certification exam. Certification is not a requirement for membership, but membership is a requirement for certification (a move to abolish that link was narrowly defeated by a vote at the ATA's General Meeting yesterday).
