Dear translators,
I often get asked by clients if a certified translation has a validity period. The most logical thing would be that it does not, as a translation cannot change in time i.e. it should be indefinite.
However, I am unsure what to say as I am a relatively newly established translator in Australia though I have 10 years of experience overseas.

What is it like here in Australia?
Are they always accepted regardless on when they were done or does it depend on the institution/company/organisation's views or policies.

NAATI certified translations?
Feb 27, 2017
Hi Sanja,
If you are talking about NAATI certified translations, I've never head about an expiry date for them.
However, please bear in mind Revalidation, so if your stamp expires on September 4, 2017, you can't put a stamp on a translation dated September 5, 2017.

depends

The certification itself doesn't - my birth certificate was translated & certified over 20 years ago, and it's still valid.
However, if the documents themselves have a validity period, that's a different story. Most corporate documents are only valid for 12-24 months, and I'd imagine personal ones like police checks (for immigration), tax records etc. also run out sooner or later.
Cheers,
D.

Thank you both for your answers!

Hello Vanda and Daria,
Thank you both for your answers. They are much appreciated.
Yes, I did mean translations certified by a NAATI translator.
And your responses were to the point.
So basically, if a translation is certified and the document is still considered current the translation is always valid.
All the best in your work.
Cheers
Sanja
