Dear colleagues,

I'm translating an idml file in Studio 2019 and need to use thin spaces. The source text doesn't contain any, so I can't copy/paste.

Many thanks in advance for any tips!

Kind regards
Erik

You can copy it from here:
https://www.compart.com/en/unicode/U%202009
(the thin space is inside the box near the top of the page)

Alt+ Dec 7, 2020

Hello Erik,

I think you could give a try to :

Thin space : Alt+ 8201
Thin non-breaking space : Alt+ 8239

Hope it helps!

PS - The same result with the Samuel's link

Thanks, Adrien! However, this inserts a slash or a circle, respectively. I suppose these aren't the characters I'm looking for in an idml document?

Carlinga.exe Dec 7, 2020

It should work with carlinga.exe. You once asked me for it here in proz and perhaps you still have it on your PC. Hotstring would be  " " (won´t be displayed here).

Allerbest,

Matthias

Compart / Carlinga Dec 7, 2020

Thanks, Matthias, for reminding me of Carlinga - seems I don't have it anymore, and any download links I've tried seem to be dead.

@Samuel: I've managed to find the relevant page on compart. However, when I copy and paste the character into my SDLXLIFF file, it appears to be the same as a full-width non breaking space... Any other ideas?

I find that it very often works to go for Insert > Symbol and then look up the character I want. Thin space is a little hard, of course, since the character map only shows an empty square. Personally I have often used it for trema (…) and other characters I otherwise have problems finding.

It does not work always (it would be font dependent in some instances), but in this case you will find it here:
Skjermbilde

Just a tip when you are stuck.

Carlinga vs. copying from Word Dec 7, 2020

@Roy: Thanks, Roy, I've tried that. The character will be displayed like a full width non-breaking space in Trados, so I'm not sure whether this works.

Using Carlinga, I get a character that looks like a regular breaking space in Trados, so I'm not sure whether this works either.

I meant it more like a suggestion that at least in some instances help. I realise though regrettably that it doesn't work all the time.

ProZ.com forum software monster strikes again... the space should be a plus sign... and a plus sign inside a URL is %2B.

I tested it and yes, in Trados it looks like a regular non-breaking space, but if I paste it into a word, and then select that entire word (including the pasted space) and copy and paste it into a text editor that shows Unicode codes in the status bar (e.g. Babelpad), the thin space appears to survive the round-trip.

Thanks a lot for all the effort, Samuel! I'd still love to hear from someone who could check this directly in InDesign, but so far, it seems to be a shot worth taking.
