Membership Campaign with spelling mistakes (Site staff: not a spelling mistake) Thread poster: Mariana Barrancos

I wish you could take a minute to correct the spelling mistake on your Membership campaign page (Spanish version) http://esl.proz.com/membership/campaign/main Membership in Spanish is Membresía, not Membrecía. Please check the RAE webiste, when in doubt. Thanks! | | | Regional differences apply | Nov 23, 2014 |

Paul, the REAL ACADEMIA ESPAÑOLA says membresía with C does not exist in the Spanish language. I understand it may be spelled like that in Spain, but it is still a spelling mistake. Personally, it is the first time I ever seen it written with C. Here's the link to the RAE's official word page: http://lema.rae.es/drae/?val=membrecía Paul Carmichael wrote: Mariana Barrancos wrote: Membership in Spanish is Membresía Not here in Spain. | | | You didn't hear me | Nov 23, 2014 |

My point is that international texts should avoid using regional variations. membresía. 1. f. Ec., El Salv., Guat., Hond., Méx. y Pan. Condición de miembro de una entidad. 2. f. A quick search on Internet reveals that in Spain "membresía" (spelt with an s) is many times more common that "membrecía" (spelt with a c).

La versión de consulta online del DRAE es del año 2001. La 23° versión, del 2014, sí registra membrecía. Además, la grafía con c ya estaba incorporada en el DPD. Y sí, es más frecuente verla con s. | | | Gracias Marina | Nov 23, 2014 |

membrecía. But, from the Wikilengua link quoted by Teresa: Esta palabra se puede ver escrita tanto membresía (mayoritaria) como membrecía. Ambas formas están aceptadas por igual en la Nueva gramática de las Academias... ... La forma más usada es membresía y así figura en el DUE [Diccionario de uso del español], de María Moliner*. ==================== *María Moliner, lexicógrafa española. | | | RominaZ Argentina English to Spanish + ... Spelling of the word membership in Spanish according to the Diccionario Panhispánico de Dudas | Nov 25, 2014 |
Hi all, Thanks for taking the time to post this suggestion. The spelling of the word membership in Spanish has been updated on the Spanish localized version of this campaign following the recommendation of the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas 2005 already quoted by Marina and Teresa in this thread: membrecía. En muchos países americanos, ‘condición de miembro’ y ‘conjunto de miembros’: «Cumplir con los criterios para obtener la membrecía en la unión monetaria económica de Europa» (Excélsior [Méx.] 2.1.97); «El éxito con que culminó la huelga favoreció el aumento de la membrecía de esa federación» (Gordon Crisis [Méx. 1989]). To my knowledge, nobody uses "membresía" for "membership" in Spain. Just like nobody uses "estadía" for "stay" (proper word in standard Spanish is "estancia"). This is like using "guaga" to refer to a "bus". It sounds beautiful, yet aukward for a standard Spanish speaker. Since this is an international site, why not stick to more neutral form, say: "afiliación" o "pase a ser miembro”? Or simply "miembros".
