Hello everyone and Site Staff,
I would like to request one more option added to the Profile Messages in the Email Preferences. Right now, we have 4 options, namely:
a) Allow anyone to send me messages via my profile page
b) Allow only ProZ.com users who are logged in to send me messages via my profile
c) Allow only logged-in ProZ.com members to send me email via my profile page
d) Allow no one to send me messages via my profile page

I would like to request one more option added to the Profile Messages in the Email Preferences. Right now, we have 4 options, namely:
a) Allow anyone to send me messages via my profile page
b) Allow only ProZ.com users who are logged in to send me messages via my profile
c) Allow only logged-in ProZ.com members to send me email via my profile page
d) Allow no one to send me messages via my profile page
The other option which I would like to be added to the feature is:
Allow BOTH Proz.com users and Proz.com members who are logged in to send me messages via my profile.
The reason is that if I have a) ticked, anyone, literally anyone from a translator/outsourcer to some dubious people who provide dating services to Viagras could access me by sending their messages thru Proz, and I don't want that. I know I could block particular IP addresses, but they could literally come from anywhere and I see it as a cat-and-mouse situation.
Ticking d) would be completely out of the question, since there are some translators/outsourcers who would seriously like to contact me, and there won't be other method if they don't know my email address.
Ticking b) would be not enough, since like I wrote above some translators/outsourcers may or may not be categorized as Proz.com users, but rather as Proz.com members. So if I'm not mistaken, I believe I wouldn't be receiving messages from Proz.com members.
And ticking c) is the same as ticking b), except that the only difference is that I won't be receiving messages from Proz.com users (basic site users who are registered at Proz), which I believe there are many who would like to work with both members and non-members at Proz.
Therefore, if my suggested option could be added to this feature, both logged-in members AND basic site users could send messages via the Proz profile.
What do you all think?
Or am I missing something here?
P.S. I've been receiving some messages via my profile, from dating services to salespeople trying to sell me databases of translation agencies for a certain amount which I don't need and consider this to be an unsolicited mail. ▲ Collapse

I don’t think your proposed option is any different than option b. Unless I am mistaken, all members are also users. “Members” just means “paid users”; that’s all.

Thanks for your reply. So according to Ambrose and your interpretation, my suggestion is no different from option b). Assuming that both of you are correct, then the question is, why are there options b) and c) separately and not a combination of b) + c) in one package?

A combination of b) + c) would be equal to b).

Thanks for your explanation. One thing I don't understand is that option c) above enables only the "sub-set" of users in option b). Do these sub-sets refer to 'paying members'?
And if my understanding is correct, if I do NOT want to receive messages from non-logged-in visitors, I should select option b), which includes BOTH paying members and basic site users (i.e. non-paying members who are registered at Proz) who are logged-in?

Option b) is "Allow only ProZ.com users who are logged in to send me messages via my profile"
This enables all site users who have a valid profile (both members and non-members) AND who are currently logged in.
Option c) is "Allow only logged-in ProZ.com members to send me email via my profile page"
This includes all site users who are ProZ.com members AND who are currently logged-in.
For further clarification I paste below some definitions from the ProZ.com site glossary:
ProZ.com member: A site user with a current paid membership subscription at ProZ.com. Often referred to on the site simply as a member.
ProZ.com user, site user, user: Anyone who uses ProZ.com.
ProZ.com non-member, visitor or guest:A site user who is not a ProZ.com member.
