I agree with both these ideas. Or Medicine/Pharma.

P.S. I also agree with Catherine that "Health" might receive undesired attention. (This will be familiar to medical translators who have to Google certain parts of the body and get all sorts of undesirable websites coming up)

And why not just a plain "Medical Forum"? Clear and concise.

Excellent idea Oct 1, 2010

I think this is an excellent idea Catherine. Medical translators really do have special challenges, which you list very clearly in your original post. And to those who disagree: indeed, there is no reason why there cannot be other specialty forums, at least for the main areas of specialty translation if those translators desire it.

Scope widening rapidly... Oct 1, 2010

This already shows one of the major reasons why I believe this initiative will fail to retain focus. Even before you've got a name for the forum you're expanding the scope from 'medical' to 'medical plus pharmaceuticals'.

Next step? - Hmmm... pharmaceuticals? - presumbly both human and veterinary pharmaceuticals (if not, then why not?). Aha! - great, there's a special forum for veterinary pharmaceuticals and related topics. Errr... does that include animal husbandry? Yes, of course

Hey - did you know Proz.com has a special forum on farming? Just what I need!

Why not? Oct 1, 2010

Dear Staff,

At first, my most enthusiastic congratulations for the Virtual Conference. Hope you had some rest since

As you certainly noticed, the focus groups were crowdy and a bit untidy. Same thing with the Medical Translators focus group, as members were so excited to meet together that it was difficult, let's say impossible, to have a really professional discussion.

However, some general trend was perceptible :

We, Medical Translators, wish to have a forum dedicated to our profession on ProZ !

I promised to ask for this favour this morning.

Why an MT forum ?

Because our particular needs have considerably evolved throughout the years, in many domains :

- International Regulatory Affairs and Legislation(s)
- Pharmaceutical research
- Medical devices and instrumental design and regulation
- Our specific clients demands
- Our technical constraints (e.g. specific software),
etc.

We do need to help each other on all those subjects, and to discuss some of their aspects.

We think that ProZ would be a perfect nest for our contributions.

Thank you in advance

Catherine

I strongly disagree with such kind of suggestion.
If staff will let such kind of forum classification then every specific area would have right to request their own forum. Gaming Translators, Legal Translators, Literature Translators (and goes on, uncountable numbers of forums).
What makes Medical Transaltors special than other Specialization Areas?

[Edited at 2010-10-01 07:45 GMT]

And what's the problem with several specific area forums? Right now, we have language forums and we have to do time.consuming searchs to find something in the search section which not always gives us the best results. With Catherine's suggestion, searches will be faster and debates will be richer.

I strongly support Catherine's idea.

Dear MediaMatrix,

What is a medical translator in your mind ?

A medical translator is asked by his/her clients to translate in the following domains :

- Regulatory affairs :a mixed of international legal and administrative issues related to the marketing of human and veterinary (yes ) products,
- Clinical trials of drugs and medical, surgical devices/instruments, etc.
- Drug monographies (human and vet)
- Lab diagnostic devices/products descriptions/users's manuals
- Medical devices/instruments descriptions / users'manuals
- Medical literature articles (vet also, sometimes )
- Training manuals for Pharm Reps, including in vet pharmacology
- Medical statistics
- Pharmaco-economy reports
- Toxicity and Safety reports / sheets
- Public health reports, etc. etc.

You are right, our scope of action is very wide

Catherine

... that in the modern interdisciplinary world there's not much to distinguish 'medical' from, say, 'legal', or the ubiquitous catch-all 'technical'.

Excellent idea Cath !

If someone needs an adult content forum he/she can ask for as well

I would appreciate Med/Pharam because to much linked in many cases IMHO; just think about an SPC

Content ? Oct 5, 2010

Well, as a medical translator myself, I would probably read all the threads about medical transltion if there were any in proz.

But as there are...none,

I don't see the logic behind (and the need of) creating a forum for a topic which is nearly never discussed in more general forums.

You should also consider Kudows were "medical" terminology is frequently asked and where the structure of Kudows does not allow an easy discussion.
Bringing a wider argument on a forum could be very much interesting.
An exemple: "4way cross-over study" was recetly asked; try to discuss this issue on kudows, quite difficult !
A forum should allow a deepest discussion.

Equal opportunities Oct 6, 2010

M. Ali Bayraktar wrote:
If site staff will do your request, then according to the equal opportunity principles, they should provide a seperate forum for each specialization areas here.

ProZ.com does not apply equal opportunities principles when creating new forums. If they did, then there would be a separate forum for each language and for each country, and there isn't.

You have no right to start an initiative seperating translators by their specialization areas here.

Translators won't become separated just because they have separate forums dedicated to some unique aspect they share. If the forum would be closed for any translator who does not have some medical field listed on his profile, then it would be more exclusive, but even that won't cause fragmentation or isolation among ProZ.com members.

Many thanks to Lucia and the ProZ staff !!
Long life to the Medical forum.

Yes, this name is the simplest and the easiest to let any interested translator find it.

Thanks again
Catherine
