Without a doubt: Bill Weaver, who translated Calvino, Eco, etc. into English, working closely with them. I met him through mutual friends in the publishing business at a time when I was busy and really wasn't considering taking up translation. But his conversation started me thinking about it. Open any English translation of these Italian authors and chances are, you'll see "Translation by William Weaver".
