This is what I mean by "wrong information 'communicated' ": I am a Katie Melua fan - but one idea that has struck this linguist is the idea that I know how to be on my guard saying, "I like Katie Melua" in such a way that suggests that I don't. Confused?

It lies in the different allophones for the letter "l" - more information available here http://homepage.ntu.edu.tw/~karchung/intro%20page%2014.htm. I think that using the wrong allophone for "l" in the word "like" could suggest an underlying "don't" in the sentence: "I like Katie Melua". Do you understand? Say it to yourself and see if you really disagree.
